The Official Website of The Pleurothallid Alliance
The Pleurothallid Alliance encourages the cultivation, conservation and appreciation of all orchids of the subtribe Pleurothallidinae. We also assist in disseminating knowledge about them, gathering information about habitats; and supporting horticultural and scientific studies of pleurothallid orchids.
The World of Pleurothallids
Welcome to the website dedicated to the appreciation of orchids of the pleurothallid alliance!
Anyone who believes that less is more would be pleased with pleurothallids, a group of genera of New World orchids that includes many suited for culture under lights and inside the home where the correct environment can be created. Most of the plants are native to the cloud forests, where they thrive on low temperatures, high humidity and low light.
Look closely and you'll discover a bounty of colors, shapes and textures in miniature that remain unrivaled in the orchid family. Anyone with a penchant for packing a lot of diversity into limited space will find the colors and shapes of their dreams in these Lilliputians of the orchid world.
AOS Members Meeting in Portland, Oregon
If any of you are going to make it to the AOS Members' Meeting in Portland, there will be a Pleurothallid Alliance meeting that is open to all. Alfonso Doucette will be presenting his experiences with growing super-cool species in wine coolers. I'm eager to adopt this "tech" myself for all those itty bitty gems that prefer to shiver. Here is a link to the AOS meeting schedule: www.portlandorchidsociety.org
