The genus Luerella (lur-EL-ah) is named after Dr. Carlyle Luer who has done much to bring order to the members of the Pleurothallid Alliance. It was split from Masdevallia based on DNA tests. This genus contains only one species, Luerella pelicaniceps, and is found in the cloud forests of Panama.
