Acinopetala (ah-sin-oh-PET-ah-lah) is distinguished by a caespitose habit, a single-flowered or successively-flowered raceme (except for two species with simultaneous flowers - A. chontalensis and A. geminiflora) that is borne by a peduncle round in cross-section. The sepals form a tube or cup. The petals have an acute process below the middle (absent in A. adamsii). Because of the distinct callus of the petal, M. schizopetala has been transferred here from Masdevallia section Zahlbrucknerae. The remaining species used to reside in Masdevallia section Minutae.
